New Stuff to look at- Inspiration; David Carson Interviews

The Vignelli's 1970's subway Map.
& images from the Vitra catalogue designed by Cornel Windling. The font he uses in the cover and throughout is ITC Grouch. He also uses a version of Futura that he re-drew for the inside text.
If you want to see more pages from the catalogue click here.
Also remember that: YOU SHOULD BE UPDATING YOUR BLOGS WEEKLY WITH WORK! Put your drafts as you work through them that way we see what your process is!

Also here are examples of some nice fun ID creation and usage of type by Christophe Jacquet and Giancarlo Oprandi for The Centre Culturel Francais d'Alger. You can see more examples of this at Oprandi's website. By the way the body type he uses is Times New Roman (yes!).

Also, look at this link to an interview with David Carson about his design process. Take a look at his desktop. I know its a quark site, but what he says is great.

Patterns…Colors… and research inspiration

Some of you are working on stuff with patterns (creating some) check this site out for some inspiration.
PRINTPATTERN

Here is a link to the pattern books which you can get on Amazon.com for cheaper. These books come with a cd with these patterns, but they are really good for color palette inspiration.
Pattern Books

And I mentioned FELIX GONZALES-TORRES to some of you. Check this entry out about him at the Guggenheim. It also has 3 pictures of his seminal works.

New Stuff to look at > French Vogue

Here are some scanned examples of pages from the latest issue of French Vogue. They are more experimental than the American version. But take a look at their pages. The Magazine costs $15, but here are some scans. The font they use for heads is BIG CASLON/Caslon family type along with a few others. See how they layer the letters on top of each other in the Agenda page.

More type treatments

from Serial Cut in Madrid, Spain. Check out how much fun they have with type.

And if you want to check out some cool work, editorial and otherwise check out the website for GEO2, the Spanish magazine from Ipsum Planet design. This magazine is one of the most influential in europe and it even includes a free typeface with every issue you buy (you need the codes to get the type). These guys and gals have created lots of type that have become very popular. Check out both the GEO2 site (the magazine is available at any of the larger newstands in the city) and the Ipsum Planet site (click on the logo to the right of the GEO2 site to access the Ipsum website).

More Type inspiration

These samples come from the phenomenal guys at NON-FORMAT (Kjell Ekhorn + Jon Forss) in London and Minneapolis. These guys use a very limited palette of type, i looked through their book and i think i counted like a total of about 15 different fonts that they use all the time. Fonts they use are Akzidenz Grotesk (they use this a lot), Hermes, Moseley, Supersize, Magda, and Strokes.

Check out their website for more examples of their work, or if you can get a hold of their book, its called Non-Format. Love song.

And below am posting an example of a very nice, type treatment (look at the mix of type) from the guys at Homework in Copenhagen (the retro revolution continues).

And check out E&A Magazine online. You can purchase it at newstands (they print it on newsprint) but they also post the issues here on-line. Check out their type treatments. They are here in NYC and in Berlin!

Typography glossary

Just in case you need it, here is a very nice glossary of type terms from the folks at FontShop.
Am including the diagram here, but go to the link and you can get a definition of most of the technical type terms. I know we all forget this stuff, so its good to be reminded!
